Wang Muti Profile of the Project Director of the Bodhisattva Treasury Buddhist Association and Catalog of Authored and Edited Dharma Treasures
Author
Wang Muti, Dharma name Renhong, courtesy name Xunhong, pen name Liangzhen. His ancestral roots trace back to Madou (Mattau), Tainan, Taiwan, a name originating from the Siraya language. He currently resides in New Taipei City, Taiwan, and Tokyo, Japan.
Since childhood, he was deeply influenced by his grandfather's education in Sinology, studying classical Chinese texts such as Laozi and Zhuangzi, as well as history. He also practiced martial arts extensively. His grandfather was a calligrapher during the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan who later turned to business, becoming a successful and respected local gentleman in Tainan.
At age nine, on May 24, 1987 (the 76th year of the Republic of China), he took refuge in Buddhism under Dharma Master Huilü in Taiwan. From then on, he gradually delved into basic Buddhist doctrines and Eastern and Western philosophy.
By the age of sixteen or seventeen, he focused on systematically studying the Chinese Agamas, Madhyamaka, Tiantai, Huayan, Zen, and Tang Esoteric Buddhism, along with Pali Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, and Abhidharma. Ultimately, he converged his studies on the Dharmalaksana Yogacara School and the Pure Land teachings.
In 1995, at the age of 16-17, he began reading the Taisho Revised Tripitaka, specifically the Agama and Madhyamaka sections, Bodhisattva Nagarjuna’s Mahaprajnaparamita Sastra, and the Mahaparinirvana Sutra. He studied the concepts of the Five Skandhas, Eighteen Dhatus, Madhyamaka, and Buddha-nature. He practiced Samatha-Vipasyana (calm abiding and insight meditation) for several hours daily, and at night he slept sitting up in meditation (never lying down) for half a year.
From 1996 to 2002, starting at age 18, he took the Bodhisattva vows before the Buddha and systematically studied sutras such as the Mahasamnipata, Avatamsaka, Prajnaparamita, and Esoteric Sutras. He undertook irregular retreats, ranging from several weeks to several months, to deepen his practice of Samatha-Vipasyana and reading of the Tripitaka, after which he often sought out various masters.
In 2003, he undertook a retreat for two years and six months, during which he deeply studied Dharmalaksana Yogacara philosophy and related doctrines.
On November 4, 2007, he received the Bodhisattva precepts under the Precept-Transmitting Master, Venerable Master Hsing Yun of Fo Guang Shan.
In 2018-2019, he successively edited and published sutras and treatises on Madhyamaka, Yogacara, Abhidharma, Tiantai Master Zhiyi, and Sanlun Master Jizang.
During his longest retreat of two and a half years at age 24, his Samatha-Vipasyana practice was based on systems from the Agamas, Vimuttimagga, Yogacarabhumi-sastra (Srutamayi Bhumi), Yogacarabhumi-sutra, Zuochan Sanmei Jing, and Six Gates to Meditation. During his retreats, he mainly relied on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness and Pure Land practices.
For many years, he has deeply studied and learned various sutras and treatises of Madhyamaka and Yogacara, clarifying the correct and erroneous doctrines of ancient and modern theories, such as those of the Dilun, Shelun, and both ancient and modern Chinese transmissions of Yogacara.
Currently, he has edited, collated, or authored over 300 Buddhist Dharma treasures, including the Complete Translated Works of Tripitaka Master Xuanzang (76 volumes), the Complete Works of Tiantai Master Zhiyi (27 volumes), the Collection of Sanlun Master Jizang (17 volumes), the Commentary on the Cheng Weishi Lun, the Comparative Reading of the Commentary on the Cheng Weishi Lun, the Jnanaprasthana and Six Legs of the Sarvastivada, the Collection of Mahayana Buddhist Sutras and Treatises on Samatha-Vipasyana, the Collection of Mahayana Yogacara Sutras and Treatises on Samatha-Vipasyana, the Collection of Chinese Buddhist Treatises on Samatha-Vipasyana and Abhidharma, as well as Chinese Buddhist commentaries, essays, and Q&A books on Yogacara, Madhyamaka, and Abhidharma.
In recent years, he has published essays, writings, and edited commentaries on various sutras and treatises in Japan and Taiwan.

"At that time, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, wishing to restate his meaning, received the Buddha's awesome power, observed the ten directions, and spoke these verses:
'The boundless oceans of lands expounded,
Vairocana has completely purified them all.
The state of the World-Honored One is inconceivable,
His wisdom, spiritual powers, and strength are like this.
The oceans of vows practiced by Bodhisattvas,
Universally comply with whatever sentient beings desire in their hearts.
The thoughts and actions of sentient beings are broad and boundless,
And the Bodhisattva's lands pervade the ten directions.
The Bodhisattva heading toward omniscience,
Diligently cultivates various powers of mastery.
Immeasurable oceans of vows are universally produced,
And vast Buddha lands are all accomplished.
Cultivating the oceans of practices has no bounds,
Entering the state of the Buddha is also immeasurable.
To purify the Buddha lands of the ten directions,
Each and every land takes immeasurable eons.
Sentient beings are disturbed and muddied by afflictions,
Their discriminations, desires, and joys are not of one characteristic.
Following their minds to create karma is inconceivable,
And thus all the oceans of lands are established.
O Disciples of the Buddha, the treasury of adorned oceans of lands,
Is formed of stainless, luminous jewels.
This is due to vast and great minds of faith and understanding,
All those dwelling in the ten directions are like this.
Bodhisattvas can cultivate the practices of Samantabhadra,
Traveling the paths of fine dust motes in the Dharma Realm.
Within a speck of dust, immeasurable lands perfectly appear,
Pure, vast, and great like empty space.
Equaling the realm of space, they manifest spiritual powers,
And universally visit the abodes of all Buddhas in the Bodhimandas.
Upon lotus seats, they display a multitude of forms,
Each and every body encompassing all lands.
In a single thought, universally manifesting in the three periods of time,
All oceans of lands are completely established.
The Buddhas, using expedient means, completely enter them all,
This is what Vairocana has adorned and purified.'
--- Avatamsaka Sutra, Volume 7, "Chapter on the Perfection of Worlds"
May all merits derived from compiling, publishing, and distributing this Dharma treasure of the Tripitaka (sutras, vinaya, and sastras) be dedicated to my late father, Upasaka Wang Qiongru, for his rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, never to regress on the Bodhisattva path.
